Don't rejoice too soon. The council hasn't yet said it will cut the amount that has to be saved from the libraries budget. Here's the official statement from the council website - "The public response to libraries was also positive, with 57% of residents wanting to retain all the sites. As a result of the public budget consultation, Hounslow Council has proposed that immediate savings can be delivered by deferring some book purchases, minimising the risk of library closure. In the meantime, a more specific library consultation is underway which will inform the longer term strategy." You can read the entire press release here - http://www.hounslow.gov.uk/news_mod_home/news_mod_year/news_mod_month/news_mod_show?year1=2011&month1=2&NewsID=45131 This is from another Hounslow Chronicle post today "But the libraries are not safe yet, the new proposal to make immediate savings by deferring some book purchases still leaves a shortfall of £569,300 from the total amount that needs to be saved. Libraries are still at risk." http://www.hounslowchronicle.co.uk/west-london-news/local-hounslow-news/2011/02/01/chronicle-campaign-continues-as-council-postpones-library-proposals-109642-28096327/ Let's hope that the responses to the Library Closure Consultation (which only finished on Friday and won't yet have been analysed) are even more influential, along with the petitions, the read-in and all the publicity. 5th Feb is still "Save our Libraries Day". |
