Whereas in a school library, as librarian, I used to find myself alone with an infinite number of pupils, in public libraries they allow for loo and meal breaks and, I suspect, dealing with difficult members of the public. So to have 2 on duty you would need 3. I'm no longer up to date but I believe this is the logic. Another financial point, Ian. Fines and reservation fees used to go into the general council funds ie not be reserved for libraries. Is this still the case? If so,have they taken into account the loss of this income to general funds (if they close libraries) and have they set these sums against the costs they claim for libraries? |
