Simon Any elected representative, be they an MP or a councillor, should be available to help any of their constituents who seek their help. Where a person places his or her cross at elections should never be an issue, and it is appalling that in this borough it would appear to be. MPs and councillors are elected to serve ALL of their constituents, not just those who voted for them, and this is not a favour - it is their DUTY. As a serving councillor for twelve years I received hundreds of visitors through my surgeries and was written to and telephoned by hundreds more with requests for assistance and I can confidently say I never once asked nor sought to ascertain how any of them voted. It simply wasn't an issue. Incidentally, not a few people who sought my help during my three terms of office were known active local Labour members and sometimes officials. It seems they were happy to expect help from me which they knew they would deny to me had the roles been reversed, evidently with neither a hint of embarrassment nor a sense of irony. These are truly odd people indeed - there really is no real life equivalent of the Labour Party activist in the field of ordinary human interaction. |
