| It is clear from many postings in the issue that many residents are unhappy with recycling bins in front gardens ( of terraced houses).Perhaps we should think back to the days before we had even one box and a doorstep collection. Some of us stored jars, bottles and card until we made trips to a recycling point. If we could accommodate these receptacles and materials indoors or in rear gardens then , why cant we do so now? I live in a terrace of seven houses and five of the households do not have the recycling boxes in our front gardens. I know better than to tell contributors how to store recycled materials but here are some of the ways we do so. A small container beneath the sink for squashed plastics and cans. A large bag on the wall of the understairs cupboard for card and paper. A redundant bin in the rear garden used to store plastics until collection day. The space outside the kitchen door , previously occupied by a general waste bin for the three upturned recycling containers , only filled on the eve of recycling. All this involves a little effort but less so than constant trips to the front garden , to dispose of recycled materials into the various bins. |
