The Council had the solution to the issues on Church Street staring them in the face at the time of "The Trial" but they chose to ignore it. By designating the Park Road/Church Street route as a No Through Route and policing it with ANPR cameras, anyone wishing to get into or out of Old Isleworth, to get to local businesses, to do their shopping, get to work, take the kids to school, attend hospital appointments, buy plants etc. etc. would have been able to do so. Anyone wanting to use the route as, what some class as a "Rat Run" would only be able to do so upon payment of a penalty. Whilst there would still be an overall increase in traffic on other routes it would not have turned a 5 minute run into a 40 minute round trip for locals! It would have eased the situation by taking away local traffic from busier roads and may not have been quite so divisive. The Council chose to ignore this option, which would have impacted less upon local businesses and families, than total closure, on the grounds that they could "not be seen to be making money out of traffic control". It is, however, totally acceptable to make money off the back of box junctions, installed after the same road closure though? As an ex life, long Labour voter I find the entire situation ridiculous. Trouble is I cannot see who can sort out this mess. |
