Out of interest, and rather going back to the body of Raymond's initial post, what alternatives do you suggest rather than the closure of Church Street ?. I'd hardly describe myself as a tree-hugging left wing loony who thinks anyone who drives a car is the anti-christ, but as I repeatedly say unless the state actively discourages the use of the private motorcar then the roads are going to be even more jammed than they already are, with or without road closures. Quite frankly minor 'deterrents' like closing Church Street don't go far enough because people are still prepared to sit in their otherwise empty metal box and endure the jams than they are to get off their backsides and use alternative forms of transport. Much as I didn't agree with the 'improvements' that were done to Twickenham Road afew years ago prior to the closure of Church Street, by the same token there's nothing that could be done to enable Twickenham Road (or the surrounding local road network) to handle the ever increasing number of vehicles on it, so to me that's why the deterrents have to kick-in. Of course my preferred deterrent of controlling population growth is seen as blasphemy by many people, so in the meantime we'll have to do something a tad less extreme. So, constructive input anyone about the actual issue, or just more criticism of the Labour party ? (stressing I don't vote and have no political 'side'). |
