Adam, Hounslow Liberal Democrats have been campaigning for action on air pollution for many years. Both the A4 and the Twickenham Road have excessive levels of pollution well above maximum safety levels of NO2. In Chiswick the campaign is focused on getting the A4 throughway included in the Ultra-Low Emission zone https://hounslowlibdems.org.uk/en/article/2018/1255311/ultra-low-emission-zone-consultation Other measures advocated are the installation of a green barrier on the A4 and traffic light synchronisation to reduce stop / start traffic on Chiswick High Road (the biggest impact on pollution levels) and looking at reducing the speed limit. Isleworth will require its own tailored solutions drawing on experience and best practice from around the country and internationally. These campaigns appear to be already bearing fruit as we can see with the release of the Labour manifesto today that states on page 9 “Improving air quality and the environment has got to be a priority for our local council.” Pledge No.127 of the Labour manifesto reads “Monitor and address local pollution hot spots, especially near schools.” If the labour council is beginning at long last to take notice of what residents and activists have been saying for a very long time, that has to be progress for all concerned. |
