I cycle locally all the time and the school run for me is far more dangerous than any other time on the road. I do drive a fair bit bit long distance stuff. and passed the Advanced driving test when I was 22. But without wanting to be sexist, Some mothers do drive 'em...badly. I'm sure it would not be much better if it were loads of dads doing the school run either. The blatant lack of care and attention on the roads, lack of signalling, sudden stops total lack of attention to road markings and signs is really awful. Doors opening with no-one looking and a complete lack of spacial awareness prevail. It's a miracle every day that so few potential accidents happen. If proper pick up and drop off points were built into into school, hospital , venue and transport interchanges, which is done in other countries, that would be better. It's always going to be tight for space here so it's not always possible. But fines for stopping simply panics the driver and that's where the concentration gets warped. It would be better to create kiss and drop zones. But coming down hard and issuing a few warnings and advisories on such bad driving practices would be very welcome. |
