I'm generally not in favour of CPZs except where absolutely necessary however the 'one hour a day' ones ought to mitigate the effect on local pubs/businesses/visitors etc. I used to live in the Stile Hall Gardens CPZ area in Chiswick and voted against it despite being harangued by CPZ supporters and called various names unrepeatable on a family forum. It came anyway and the result was - easier parking outside your house during the day (though in truth I had never had to walk more than 100 yards) - a deterioration in the feel of the area. It's not so much the presence of yellow lines, machines, etc: it's more just a feeling that you're living in a tenser, more urban environment - FAR worse parking at night. The loss of spaces to yellow lines etc meant I frequently had to park in a different street entirely. This never happened before the CPZ. - Fines. The worst was on a Sunday morning at about 8-9 am where I had parked overhanging a double yellow marking the junction of a small cul-de-sac. Fortunately my neighbour discouraged the tow truck from taking my car away whilst I got dressed and organised. Some CPZs are inevitable but as somebody said they should not be street by street - Stile Hall only happened because Wellesley ROad happened because others nearer the centre of Chiswick happened. And people who campaign for them should do so with their eyes open: there's a good chance they will make things worse. |
