Modern cars have to meet all the same safety standard parameters regardless of size. Most cars are in the same safety category score the same as most (not all) 4X4s. A Vauxhall Astra is as safe as a Mercedes 4x4. Ironically, the least safe vehicles are most people movers which have poorer side and crush values. 4X4 also have a higher rate of roll and are easier to lose control of unless the driver is used to handling such effects. One or two models score very poorly and meet US standards but only just scrape into EU certification. Alll are still within industry tolerances but only just But a 4x4 can inflict far more damage at low speed than a car or light van and this is highlighted in crowded urban areas with smaller highways. These are not ideal vehicles for occasional and short distance drivers from a perspective of common sense. Envirionmentally there are a whole load of reasons. But the marketing and aura created has been brilliant and despite working in the industry, there are times when I would like a 4X4. But not living around here for sure. |
