Morally undoubtedly, legally no. Herein lies the difference between the party politician and the community councillor - the former is your representative whereas the latter is your delegate. Or to put it another way the former serves and is answerable to their party, the latter serves and is answerable to their community. Party politicians believe they are mandated to make decisions on our behalf. What is especially unfortunate in this case is that we are dealing with a mindset that believes the electorate does not properly understand what it wants, and ought therefore to leave decision making to those who know best. "Best" in this case being these hideous illuminations. There is no point in singling out and blaming individuals. This is an inevitable consequence of the system they represent. Whether it be "control freak Ruth" or "good ol' Matt", the party ultimately owns their souls and they are through their own choice powerless to act or think independently. |
