Let's say I live close, but also let's put my own situation completely aside. The main issue is the huge loss of parking. Councillor Harmer confirmed that double yellow lines will be instated at several junctions to Brook Road South and on Mafeking Avenue in February. I have seen the plan and counted 14 cars this evening parked in places (safely) where double yellow lines will be painted. There are valid reasons for this measure I am sure. However, what planning has overlooked conveniently, is that if you add those 14 spaces to the 16 lost garage spaces you end up with 30 spaces gone. Just where will those 30 displaced cars go to park? How much extra traffic congestion and air polution will this cause as drivers roam around the area hunting for spaces? What about the added hazard posed to cyclists and pedestrians by frustrated drivers forced to compete for scarce parking spaces? These are questions that myself and the car owning residents deserve proper answers to from their elected representatives. At 8pm I must drive to pick up one of my kids from a club. When I return at 9pm I know I will not be able to park anywhere near my house. |
