The present situation in relation to the recycling service is, sadly, chaotic. I have already personally stated at a public committee that I have decided to opt out of recycling. I believe the system is too complicated for many residents and have also been without a green box for several weeks. There is no preferential treatment for councillors in this service nor should there be so. An example of the problems residents face can be illustrated in a complaint I made on behalf of a disabled constituent today. He first asked the service why he had not received the recycling boxes/bags in late February. Many further complaints went without action, culminating in a call he made on 27th March. The lady I spoke to today, who was clearly very embarrassed at what has gone wrong with the service, acknowledged the long list of complaints received from my constituent, told me that the note attached to the 27th March complaint indicated that there would be action the following day (which did not happen), and apologised that nothing had happened. I recognise that the new recycling contract is meant to be environmentally friendly and do not disagree with its aims. However, I am worried that the present difficulties may turn out to be more than teething problems. |
