Once when I was home (in Ealing) I noticed a small truck collecting the food waste bins and replacing with a new one. I think this was at the start of the system and it would seem that they had run out of space on the larger lorry. Did you get information on how to reduce your waste as well as how to recycle it? Obviously the less there is the easier it is to deal with it. The Council did have a good Waste Reduction page on their website. With the downturn in trade it seems that every company I have ever dealt with has sent me a brochure/catalogue. Registering with mpsonline.org.uk and the Royal Mail gets rid of a lot of unsolicited stuff. No Junk Mail stickers are also supposed to help. I still caught someone in the office the other day throwing away a still wrapped magazine for someone who had left. It doesn't take much more effort and energy to email to get taken off the mailing list. Food Waste - www.lovefoodhatewaste.com and the supermarket site such as Sainsbury's and Waitrose have recipes. You will also find info on what Best Before dates etc really mean. I wonder how much consideration was given to how people change their habits eg no longer take to Tescos and recycle from home? Does that mean you buy less from Tescos? If you don't buy from the supermarkets you'll have less packaging .... and probably less food! I hope the situation resolves soon. As for the lorries travelling along the pavement - how could this be allowed to happen? My heart goes out to Sarah Felstead who has campaigned so long and hard about the dangerous pavements. We all use them as we all generally move between boroughs. |
