"the Lead Member overseeing the department has demonstrated the fortitude and courage to apologise, even though in truth she is the one who has been let down. A simple thing though it may be to do, this is in fact a rare occurance in politics and I think Councillor Reid's honesty is a quality to be commended." How on earth did it not occur to Cllr Reid and officers to run an evaluated pilot to test the new system before rolling out in a community of 220,000 people? The brash confidence that the system could work with no testing was plain naive. It seems that resigning for incompetence has gone out of vogue and “apologies” are the new way of wiping the sheet clean. Can it really be hoped that lessons will be learned and that big bangs will be abandoned in favour of pilots in future? What now needs to be addressed with urgency is the poor service/ mess that is being made of streets in many parts of the Borough, as well as the appropriateness of the recycling storage containers for different homes and family sizes.
