In terms of my own shopping habits I agree, no matter how the store has been branded I have always disliked the shop, and find it a very depressing experience whenever I go there (which isn't very often). At the same time somewhere like Barnes has never had a fairly large site providing an existing supermarket, it has always been modest sized commercial floorspace on ground floors with residential above, whereas with the Morrisons site we do have this in Brentford and any redevelopment should provide the same (if not greater) amount of retail floorspace. In passing I'll add that the Sainsburys Local on White Hart Lane in Barnes generated lots of local opposition (for reasons I don't really understand). Hence why I think this could be substantially improved by way of a new mixed use redevelopment of the site, although any notion of a Waitrose or M&S occupying the floorspace seems rather unlikely to me, I would have thought Lidl or Aldi would be a more likely occupier. |
