This set-up (retail on the ground floor and residential above) is OK for small business but not really acceptable for a supermarket. And as for the small businesses, allegedly replacing the supermarket, we have all seen and are seeing it now: housing with retail units on the ground floor are built, the retail units do not get used (due to artificially high rent and/or other reasons), permission is given to convert them to flats (or they just stay vacant not being used as retail) - and we end up with no retail whatsoever. It seems to me that allowing 25%residential on a previously 100% retail site means that Brentford will lose the only supermarket with parking suitable for weekly affordable shopping. |
