| I wouldn't say Mike and I were ever best buddies, but over the years I've come to realise and acknowledge that various points Mike made to me when we worked together were absolutely spot on, and I've certainly learnt some lessons from his advice. Certainly when a thread on a public forum turns into personal insults against an individual, be it a member of the public, a Council employee or a current/ex Councillor, I find it all plain 'wrong' and distasteful. Indeed even more when it comes to a serving Council employee, if Joe Bloggs insults me I can insult back without any likely potential consequences, whereas if a Council employee came on here, even in their free time, and posted something along similar lines to what Paul has, then that employee would almost certainly be sacked for gross misconduct. And then the public wonders why Council officers are often reluctant to engage more !!!. Going back to the interview/selection process, only once in my life have I been interviewed for a post by a panel comprising several Councillors, and my experience was that the 'correct' answer to every question was the one which the Councillors wanted to hear, not one clarifying what you (or the relevant legislation) could actually could deliver etc. You may be pleased to know I have not applied to be Mike's successor ;-) |
