I have just spoken to some contractors wandering around wielding a large plan at the roundabout junction with St Johns Road. They said they were engaged recently and there is going to be some major works on traffic improvement there, starting in July. My point was to say that when approaching the roundabout from St Johns Road the traffic along Twickenham Road does not view the roundabout, as a roundabout, and speeds over it. From the Twickenham Road from South Street approach, the roundabout sign is covered by other road signs, which doesn’t help. Yes, all the commuters know there is a roundabout there, but the latest road layout means that the previously slower (traffic light held up) vehicles now get up to faster speeds by the time they hit this junction, and there is often no way they are going to acknowledge any give way signs. There is also a problem with jay walkers, particularly in peak times because of the bus stops and schools, and it is very difficult for a pedestrian to cross the bus lane and road if the traffic is faster. It would be refreshing to slow the free flowing vehicles down somehow. As far as the new roundabout at the South Street junction goes, I much prefer it to the intelligent lights which were there previously … I think :-) |
