The fact is up until the late80s early 90s all an elected member got was an 'attendance allowance' for any meeting that went on over two hours plus mileage, my recollection from that time is that depending on how many committees etc. you were a member of the total was about Ł30 - Ł50 a month, no show, no allowance claimed. Dare I say that a lot of the people around then, and before, were some of the most knowledgeable and intelligent I have met. Money just didn't come into it, it was done from a sense of public service, political belief and determination to run the borough's services efficiently and for resident's benefit. The same argument about payment is being bandied about regarding school governors, yes, all these things are time consuming and can be demanding - but they are the very essence of what that idiot Cameron refers to as the 'big society', and it's been around for a lot longer than him. Nationally it is a different matter as councillors usually work full time and are not dependant on their activities for a living. M.Ps should be paid enough not to warrant any 'extras' in the way of subsidised housing or other expenses. |
