Well you are right about the desperation thingy. Notwithstanding yours and David's attempts to rubbish the evidence by ignoring it and instead mocking a conspiracy theory that I have never suggested, it is difficult to see how UKIP benefits from this arrangement other than having three more candidates in the field. They are unlikely to be elected and if they were they were they would only be UKIP councillors for five minutes anyway. They would have done better to have stuck with the Antichrist (who interestingly is still using the UKIP monicker on his leaflets). The UKIP leader openly admits on the Chronicle website that all three candidates are standing for no other reason than to satisfy a personal grudge against one of the challengers. Just how seriously should voters in Isleworth, or for that matter voters anywhere else in the borough, take a party that contests an election on these terms? I have seen the material produced by UKIP's candidate in Syon and have read the contributions on here from their man in Brentford. They are clearly sensible, intelligent candidates and although I would not vote UKIP on the grounds that I disagree fundamentally with them on their two major policy planks, they deserve to be listened to and taken seriously. But how can they be when their fellow candidates across the border comprise a gaggle of loud, foul-mouthed boozing cronies of a Labour councillor who have not the slightest interest in nor even knowledge of their party or its policies? Councillor Botterill has done his real candidates a great disservice by allowing himself and his party to become a participant in the gutter politics that has become widely associated with Labour in Isleworth, and if I were one of them I would be deeply unhappy with the millstone he had saddled me with by his inexplicable conduct. Councillor Botterill has even had to block them from speaking to the press (see Chronicle website again), insisting that he is to be contacted as their spokesperson. Why on Earth would he do this if they were genuine UKIP candidates? As for the Tories, it does beggar belief that somebody can join the party from Labour one minute and become a candidate the next. It is not as though the party is making a virtue of their "conversion", which doesn't receive any mention on their literature. Clearly local Tory activists were just queuing up to be candidates in Isleworth, which is odd if we are to believe David's predictions of an easy victory. Little wonder that even key Tories in Isleworth have made it clear they will be voting ICG. |
