France seems to be doing it sensibly by setting a 2040 deadline. There are few, if any, modern cars bought today which will still be functioning by 2040. As petrol and diesel cars reach the end of their lifetime, people will change willingly without the need for threats and punitive measures. This will provide a much more sensible and less punitive incentive for people to change than fuel price increases, taxation or any other form of surcharge. |
