Excellent scheme which I for one wholeheartedly support. It’s only a small amount, and it’s only fair that those who pollute should pay. The money will help schools or something so I don’t know what you’re all complaining about. Since Theo said the £50 a year charge was ‘a bit of a guess, based on what everyone else is doing’, Can I suggest LBH find someone who passed O level maths to work out how much diesel drivers save in fuel costs compared to those that have normal cars. You’ll find it comes out at over £250 a year, which means you can quite happily set the diesel surcharge at that amount before the economics of Satan’s fuel become unbearable. This idea of a tax ‘someone else will pay’ is great, and I can see now why Labour always uses this approach to fund its spending. As for suddenly introducing it with no warning, then my recollection is that’s standard practice for all new forms of tax take. The other standard practice is to get the new tax in place using all those, ‘small amount, fair, will pay for more teachers’ phrases, and then jack it to the max as quickly as possible. £250 next year should be on the cards. |
