I’m sorry to say you’re wrong Mick. Countless studies have shown that whilst people will talk very loudly about being green and environmental, their purchasing decisions are driven solely by their wallets; people bought diesel cars simply because they were cheaper to run. Diesel owners don’t really give a stuff that four times the nitrogen dioxide and a whopping 20 times the particulates come out of their stinky exhausts. Been known about and publicised for years, so whilst you can claim ignorance I’m afraid it’s not a very good excuse. Those emissions are now so far above legal and safety limits that the government is being sued (going through the courts at the moment) and will probably react by using taxation to change diesel cars from economic-to-run to bloomin-expensive. Their marginally lower CO2 emissions are no longer interesting as all greenhouse gas targets are being met by the massive change in how we generate electricity, which is also driven by economics, but has the nice side-line that it’s a lot ‘greener'. I’d suggest getting rid of any diesel car pretty pronto, because they’ll likely be unsellable at some point. Then you can be like me and delight in finally coming across a tax that ‘someone else has to pay’. Anyway if you bought a diesel solely because it was ‘green’, why didn’t you buy a hybrid as they're much greener, if a little more expensive. |
