You write with confidence and rather arrogantly in my view about studies and lots of publicity re the rationale for diesel car purchases Lorne. Well I was not aware of the particulates issue when I bought my diesel three years ago. No doubt those with a very high interest, professional or otherwise, in pollutants may have been aware, but not the general public. We don't have the time to focus on the minutiae. Three years ago when I bought my car available data on the dealership forecourt related to MPG and Co2 emissions and tax bands. Economy and low levels of emissions were of equal importance to me. The emissions from my car are among the lowest possible for a conventional diesel or petrol vehicle. That is why we are not penalised by the VED system and rightly so because we could not have reasonably known of the polluting effects at the time of purchase. If the council wants to apply some rules to increase the parking tariff they should be consistent with those changes applicable to VED (These mean no change for cars bought before April). That is the only fair way to deal with this matter. |
