Did anyone see one of the reports from Cumbria on the flooding where they spoke to a local bloke who said that after the last floods the residents came up with some suggestions for trying to help matters, should something like it ever happened again? They had told all the various 'experts' that visited the area that the nearby river had a lot of Willows that had grown up on very shallow soil and rock, and said that these should be removed. They pointed out that if the river were to swell again then those trees would be uprooted very easily and swept downstream causing a lot of damage. Needless to say - they were ignored and that's exactly what happened, the trees also damaging bridges etc. When will the powers that be listen and accept local residents do actually know something about their locality? |
