I tend to agree with you Anne. I wouldn't want to have to be making decisions with the burden of the financial restrictions now placed upon local authorities, however, that's why they stood for election, so no good having a whinge now. It is about being more receptive and sensitive to local issues, instead of which when they get it wrong - and we all make mistakes - they try and cover it up and hide behind bluff and bluster, and some spectacular porkies. From what I understand there are less and less 'professional' council officers and more and more consultants in suits doing the advising. These people do not have a stake in the borough like directly employed council officers do, by and large they are there for a few months then move on. Councillors really do need to draw upon their local knowledge and contacts, and this is what they seem so bloody awful at, it isn't a crime to really put these consultants on the spot and argue the point with them, that's what a councillor is there for, to put OUR interests first within the restrictions placed upon them by central government. And do you know what? I think we all get that, councillors need to trust us and our instincts too. |
