Absolutely spot on. And hopefully you'll forgive me an anecdote which helps to demonstrate the point you make. When I was Lead Member for Community Safety part of my brief was to liaise with the local police on matters of local importance. One morning I had a meeting scheduled with the Borough Commander, and as I was indoors getting ready some policemen turned up up at the door of my flat demanding I let them in. When I failed to get to the door quickly enough for their liking they threatened to kick it down. I suggested to them that this might not be a good idea, as I was due to meet their boss in half and hour and would certainly be taking the matter up with him if they did. They looked at me incredulously, clearly doubtful that somebody who lived in such a crummy flat on a sink estate might be meeting their Commander to discuss local crime issues, but gradually I persuaded them that this was indeed the case and they turned into gibbering wrecks before my eyes, humbly apologising to me for their transgression. It seemed they had got the wrong address! Does anybody think I would have got this reaction had I not have been in the position I was at the time? |
