It's a totally false picture, It's a statistic caused by new develpments with wholly unviable units There are relatively few empty shops in the viable shopping areas. Far less than in South Ealing Road and King St, Hammersmith. Whilst some vacant shops do exist, the vast majority have never been opened for trade. They are all the retail units located in the new developments none of which stand a cat in hells chance of ever being viable even if the rents and rates were free. There is simply no passing trade. And not enough disposable income from locals. It would be far better to have insisted that these new retail units be adaptable to create day centres, almshouses and facilities for the less able. Ah yes! I forgot, that does not look good on architects shiny models and utopian artists impressions! |
