It’s acknowledged that local government is a lot more prone to corruption than national government, particularly when there’s very little political opposition to ask questions. The lack of scrutiny at any level is laughable in a supposedly open democracy. Criticism is closed down, even by those now on the outside of their political club. Don’t think this is true? Go and examine what’s happened in Tower Hamlets over the past 20 years, where the current mayor was barred from public office for seven years because of electoral fraud (just one of many misdemeanours he perpetrated). Kicked out of Labour he simply set up his own party, won the last election but is once again under investigation. Who benefits from these games? Not residents, that’s for sure. |
