I lived in Barnes for many years and we gradually lost our butchers, greengrocers, small independent supermarkets etc. as gentrification progressed. These have now been replaced by shops such as M&S food, in keeping with the wealthy demographic there but not much use to those less wealthy. Barnes looks delightful but doesn't have the mix of retail that would suit Brentford, they do however have an excellent weekly Saturday Farmers market sellling lovely food. The other difference is that there hasn't been the massive housing development there, Brentford's development includes smaller shopping premises which could hopefully house shops that local people actually want to use. And yet the displaced shops from Albany Parade are still not in situ, as they were promised. Surely the combination of Hounslow council, Ballymore and the other developers could come up with some medium term incentives to encourage retailers to take up the leases? |
