Simon You've touched upon the age-old dichotomy between representative and delegatory government. Or to put it in layman's terms, whether our councillors and MPs are there to impose their own views on us or to give a voice to ours. The community councillors of old took the view that we were there to put the popular will into action. There are some councillors and MPs from political parties who, notwithstanding their tribal allegiances, are big enough and confident enough in themselves to speak for the people whom they were elected to serve. Sadly there are many others whose insecurity and mediocrity as human beings leads them to derive comfort from the knowledge that they have the power to override the will of those over whom, on the back of the efforts of others more talented than themselves, they have managed to achieve some temporary authority. Sad, but an unfortunate fact of modern life. At school these people were usually pencil monitors or pretend librarians. |
