It's sad to see the losses of these pubs and as Phil Andrews says in another thread, one man can only do so much to keep them open. I used the Horse Guards occasionally when my usual place was full and it was never short of excellent - and the descriptions of it being a front room are totally accurate. So in the last year, three pubs within 100 yards of my front door have closed (Bricklayers, Horse Guards and Pottery Arms) and another may be gone soon (Albany). Habits change, people have more places to spend their leisure money, the reasons are varied. One older gentleman I know blames the widespread introduction of central heating in homes and he's probably got a point there. Some borough's planning policies have elements that are put in to resist the loss of pubs, and do not allow changes of use unless it can be proved through marketing etc that there is no choice. But this seems generally to delay the inevitable. |
