| I don't think anyone would want Brentford to return to the heavy industrial town it was. I can just about remember it as the decline took hold. But things evolve and whilst Gasworks, tyre factory, waterworks and marshalling yards etc. have gone. The river has returned to being able to sustain life and the smell that used to dog the river from Wandsworth to Isleworth has gone. But the transition of industries has faltered. Office based industry has done OK, Sky have prospered here, but space for small light industries and service industries which can provide good long term jobs and careers have not figured so well. There seems, from talking over many years to local officials both elected and not that they are considered insignificant and not worth bothering about. Except for many local people these are the most likely local employers. It's an ideal place for small artisan businesses and services that require a site rather than offices and the infrastructure is in place albeit in need of renovation. But adaptation and updating is something that we do rather well in this country when the will and the positive attitude are in place. Unfortunately, creativity, can do attitudes and thinking outside the box have been something that has been devoid in local policies of any persuasion for longer than I care to recall. We get little glimmers but never a bright guiding light. |
