I was only agreeing with the "will they ever learn" bit. "this type of thing in my view is an inevitable consequence of Councillors being far too heavily influenced by a feeling of 'duty' to their constituents" That statement in my view is total sphericals. The then Borough Solicitor when I was around - in one of the planning legislation training sessions for councillors, was at pains to say that members should NOT get involved with constituents where planning was concerned. By all means have a look at the site, and the area and the plans, but we were told never, ever to promise to vote a certain way or show any bias, in fact better not to discuss an application at all with the person concerned. I can remember being put under considerable pressure by certain members and point blank refusing to enter into any discussion at all. To be honest the only area planning committee where there were problems was Heston, I can't recall any of the others behaving in anything like the manner Heston did, you can draw your own conclusions, for some people doing deals and favours for friends is meat and drink, not to say a way of life. Shamefully Hounslow failed to tackle this head on before, this reported event was probably only the tip of a large iceberg. Disgraceful. |
