Lib Dem tellers will need to be organised to keep a very close watch on the Ivybridge polling station on polling day. This is where Labour does its "dodgy business" and this could be worth up to 300 votes to them. In 2010 one Labour candidate was quite brazenly walking into the polling station and filling out ballot slips for non-English speaking voters. The presiding officer, herself a Labour Party member who had "volunteered" for duty at that particular polling station despite having no obvious connection for the area, was openly allowing it to happen. In 2014 the ICG warned the Elections Officer at LBH that we did not expect a repeat of these events and, to be fair, things were kept much more under control. We also felt the need to ensure that police officers attending that particular polling station were familiarised with electoral law because generally speaking they are not, and tend to regard their duties as being more about simply maintaining public order. Candidates and their campaign workers should not be inside the polling stations, far less should they be handling the ballot papers of members of the public. Neither should they be within reasonable distance, or within earshot, of the stations badgering electors. |
