I don't know the percentages but there are getting on for almost 200 different languages now spoken in this borough. If children are to be able to access the curriculum and integrate, grow and eventually work here then this service is essential. There is a slight problem in that some primary schools have sat on some very healthy reserves for some years, so in this climate it probably isn't unreasonable to expect that they should spend some of that money on language provision, but that doesn't seem to be the way this has been handled. People will at some point hopefully wake up and ask if a few bob less on the council tax is really worth cutting services to the point of extinction and building in public parks for. |
