"Would that be the same Thames Water that is undertaking a massive renovation of the water mains system?" The only reason Thames is spending more on the current system is that OFWAT have said that future price increases to the level of reduction in leakages. Until this was done there was serious under investment in the system. Leaks are well above what they were five years ago and have been rising because money is not being spent. The excuse is always that this is a Victorian system but that doesn't explain why the inevitable deterioration has not been stemmed. In fact it is probably wrong to categorise much of their spending as investment it is really repair of the existing system. The recent burst main in Brentford appears to have been caused by work further east in areas like Acton and Hammersmith which has increased pressure in the system exposing weak points. These projects are working their way towards us so we can expect lots more burst mains in the area in the coming months. |
