Its the Thames Water that was privatised and regulated in 1989 but chose to only start replacing Victorian pipes 3 years ago. Its the Thames Water that has made huge profits since regulation, which reported profits of £256.5 million for 2004-05, which is still leaking 201.3 million gallons/day (which is the highest leakage rate in the country). It is the same Thames Water which was today told by the House of Lords committee on science and technology that it must stop making excuses and "if it cannot stem the losses it should be hit with hefty fines to punish it for wasting millions of gallons a day, (say the peers)" It is the same Thames Water that is not meeting targets set by Ofwat. |
