| A few years ago now, but I remember when hospital car parks used to be free. Also, from what I understand, staff have to pay now too (certainly @ Hammersmith). So if you're a nurse on a low wage, working all shifts it can be a cost versus safety issue. (The nurses looking after me parked a long way from the hospital & walked the rest as they couldn't afford the parking [£10 a day I think they said it was]). My Nan fell over & we had to take her to West Mid A&E because we thought she'd broken a bone. We spent the whole time trying to get change & topping up the parking tickets. This was very stressful in an already stressful situation (as well as costly). Ultimately, the wait was over 3 hours, but of course you don't know how much you need to pay for parking when you arrive as you don't know how long you will be. I'm sure that's true for most appointments (not just A&E visits), so if you're by yourself & have to top up the parking then you would worry about being called for your appointment while you're doing so. After all, nobody chooses to be sick or to have to go to hospital, so it seems improper to add further stress & costs under these circumstances. Also, back to the phones...what's that all about then? Nobody is suggesting that hospitals provide a free phone service, but I cannot see any justification for daylight robbery! |
