I think rather than focusing just on the number of GP's it is important to look at how many full time equivalents there are. Many more GP's now work part time and large numbers of experienced GP's are taking early retirement.

The constant tinkering around with the contract and changing of priorities does not help but before blaming the current administration exclusively it is important to remember that many professionals feel that the rot set in with the 2004 changes brought in by John Reid / Tony Blair.
