Hi Steve Allum In the Fifties and Sixties the planers seemed to have the Idea of opening up the high street as it was claustrophobic with buildings built up to the road line. There were many Ideas, one was to widen the Kew Bridge Road from Kew Bridge through to Hounslow, so the demotion began. Many Fullers pubs were pulled down the Gas works was puled down, which opened up the view to the river. A lot of shops were pulled down to facilitate the widening of the road and make the High street a much wider and airer place to live and work. The new Red Lion Pub was built beside the short bit of dual carriage way, but the Old Red Lion stood empty on the opposite corner of Ealing Road for many years. I use to pass by and think they will have to pull it down soon as it's still stuck out into where the new road will be, but unbeknown by me the road had been scraped. It came as a surprise, when the old pub was pulled down a block of flats was built on the foot print of the old pub. Since then I feel that all the modern developers are succeeding in closing in the High Street once again with even higher buildings than before. I personally feel that People who work in this industry should serve 25 years to life in the smallest cell possible. |
