"It's the revenue they're after" No it isn't. It escapes people's notice that more residents mean more services have to be provided - more bins emptied etc but most notably, more social services for children/elderly/disabled/sick. There are two reasons councils (including this one) build: 1) It is a requirement from central government and from London Government 2) Councils have a responsibility to provide housing for those without access to private housing. We have a very long waiting list and many people in inadequate housing eg sofa surfing or families of 5 in 1-bed flats. All of the extra housing coming on stream across the borough last year (or the year before) provided around £1M pa gross in council tax. Set this against £150m+ pa cuts in central government grant over the last few years. And if you think Brentford is singled out for new development, take a look at central Hounslow, Isleworth, Feltham etc. |
