Easy to criticise this (which was my first reaction) but actually, I'd be very surprised if the basketball court is used much at all, but especially during school hours. Floreat are paying for the modifications (which IMO are an improvement anyway) and will pay some kind of rent for their use of the space - licence currently being negotiated- which will be used for improvements within the park. Also, whether we like it or not, the Floreat school is a reality and local (and no doubt not so local) children are being educated there. It would not sit well with my conscience to deny small children the opportunity to run around a bit in their break/PE times. It is not the thin end of any wedge, it's a considered response to a problem which will IMO be of benefit to park users as well as school pupils. |
