What exactly IS the problem with the proposed move of Watermans Arts Centre? Surely not just the dreaded charge for parking? Surely not the ‘journey to the hinterland’? As Keith has pointed out above, the proposed new location (assuming it’s in – or very close to – Brentford High Street) is very well served by bus routes. It seems to me that any move from the present isolated and unattractive location (windswept, litter-blown, muddy etc) can only be an improvement. Likewise, the addition to Brentford High Street of an improved Watermans Arts Centre could only be of great benefit to the town centre since it could be seen as almost a civic building in the absence of anything currently resembling one - no town hall, no police station, no library, no church, no big-name supermarket - even Starbucks seems to have given it a miss. Brentford town centre cries out for something distinctive enough and attractive enough to give it some significance, or to at least form a central focus point, and a newly-designed Watermans could do just that. |
