I'm typing this from an internet cafe in the Middle East. On the whole, burkas here are viewed with suspicion and regarded as an unwelcome political symbol, rather than a religious one (and there is a profound difference). As such, it needn't be racist to be opposed to the burka. I personally regard the the burka as ugly, sinister and an in-your-face (no pun intended) symbol of separation. If a woman wants to wear a burka, however, it's none of my business. Furthermore, banning the burka, would be illiberal and, as Robin(?) may have said, could be the beginning of slippery slope. The state should have no business in what a person wears (assuming the individual has exercised freedom of choice in their choice of dress). --- On Sunday we took my daughter to a doctor (tonsillitis). A Saudi woman in a burka took objection to my being in the waiting room and voiced disapproval at my unveiled wife. The receptionist - a young hijabi woman (wearing a scarf that covers the hair but not the face), remarked that the burka woman acted and looked "abid" and "zenkha" (slavish and ridiculous/silly). In my experience, this sums up mainstream Arab Muslim opinion to the burka. |
