| Because Rob this is England, because this is not 'just' a matter of what people choose to wear, because if you live in a country you should try and adopt its customs and accepted social behaviours. You should not set yourself apart deliberately, you should respect your host country's norms. As has been said we do not know how many women are browbeaten into wearing the veil etc. or how many just want to make a point and stick two fingers up to the rest of us, either way many people see far too much consideration being given to people who have been welcomed here and seeing others discriminated against, as has happened with people wearing the crucifix. We just seem frightened of sticking our heads over the parapet and it suits the PC brigade to witter on about 'culture and customs'. It should not be overlooked that this has also covered up the disgraceful matter of female circumcision and forced marriages and even 'honour' killings. We live in the 21st Century and these things are not acceptable here. If you really want to live 500 years behind the times then there are plenty of countries where you can do so. Live in Saudi Arabia where women cannot go out without a male chaperone, or drive and generally have their personal freedom curtailed. |
