| I agree Andy, which is why I spend a lot of time on Facebook, here, on Bluesky and Substack explaining my activities and my views. I have published 520 weekly blogs on my activities and opinions, and I am often surprised when people when I knock on doors or meet them, express that they value the efforts I make to improve Brentford, Hounslow and the country, and tell residents (and anyone else who wants to see them) of my opinions and activities. This is not a trivial enterprise, probably taking me at least a full day each week. There is a subset of people with whom I converse online comment on Brentford TW8 and Brentford TV. This thread seems to be started by a Reform candidate who now lives, apparently, in Ealing. He doesn't bother to say anything about the policies he supports, which got him a not very impressive vote of 1.6% of the electorate in the 2024 GLA election. Of course, he is a Reformer, so he see his job is to spread disinformation to promote his right wing views. I don't have a solid opinion on some of the matters he provides such misleading caricatures of, but will respond on one of them. Re drugs, my view is that it is perfectly clear that the current policy doesn't work. Other approaches are being trialled in various countries and places, like some states in the USA, in Portugal, and in Scotland. I believe the main change is to stop trying to deal with drugs by police action. Government has been doing this since I was a student 50 years ago and has clearly failed. As an active councillor, I see the impact of this failure: too much police time wasted on trying to catch and prosecute an endless supply of offenders, and many residents upset by the impact on their residential areas. At worst, violent crime, often involving knives. Sensible countries are changing from this and moving towards a public health approach. It is not a simple or always successful, but has much better outcomes than either alcohol prohibition of yore in the USA or our own prohibition in England now. I am not going to deal with the other matters he mentions, I think very few of which are Green Party policies. I refer interested people to the very comprehensive manifesto from 2024 https://greenparty.org.uk/about/our-manifesto/ and the current Hounslow council manifesto which is much more relevant to Brentford and what I will be working for https://hounslow.greenparty.org.uk/hounlow-green-party-manifesto/ I am happy to discuss this with anyone who (preferably) bothers to read the manifesto, preferably in person or via email to guy.lambert@hounslow.gov.uk and particularly if they live in Brentford West, where I serve and wish to continue to serve. I am very aware of my own imperfection but I do and will try to live by the Green values:"honesty, fairness, efficient and competentmanagement, empathy, working for you..." |
