Yes, even as far back in the 80s when I was on the council Church St. was an issue, and from time to time there were various theories and ideas to tackle the traffic. And who could forget the infamous barrier at the junction of Worple Rd and Talbot Rd. that nearly caused civil unrest? Realistically the best we can hope for is that with the increased volume of traffic sensible measures to control the speed in small residential roads are looked at. On the main roads keeping the volume moving, with various measures in place, so that people stay on those roads is the key. I don't think anyone doubts the real concerns of people in Church St., but councillors have barged in without thinking any of this through and then not being well briefed and making complete pillocks of themselves at a public meeting. None of them seemed to have any information I suppose they must have had about traffic counts and when these were done etc. Instead they made ill informed and just plain silly remarks, talking as if they were apart from 'the council', it was breathtakingly naïve and incompetent. |
