But it is an ugly building and the recently added massive mural is a prime example of turd polishing. A really quality addition to the area. However, if planning controls are so stringent in Hounslow (and elsewhere), how do we end up with situations such as that on the Paragon development in Brentford? Residents moved out at very short notice because the buildings lack the fire precautions that were supposed to have been built in. It’s natural that people are sceptical about the transparency of planning. There are a lot of cosy links between local authorities and developers. Maybe not illegal, but it certainly helps grease the wheels when it comes to new projects being approved. It’s counter-productive to ignore the views of people who live in an area designated for development. They have chosen to live there and invested in that community. Many are appalled at the apparent mania for overdevelopment. Cramming more people into an area without putting in supporting infrastructure isn’t very sensible. Then, when those new developments turn out to be sub-standard (as with the Paragon) it seems nobody has to carry the can, other than the poor residents forced out of their homes. A cynic might suggest that the developers are more interested in profit than people. And if the local authority is unable, or unwilling, to police them, then where dies that leave the whole process? |
